IELTS TRF Format Changing from 17 July 2026: What Students Need to Know

IELTS has announced a small design change to the Test Report Form, also called the TRF. This change will start from 17 July 2026.

Many students may worry when they hear that the IELTS TRF is changing. The good news is simple: your IELTS score is not changing, your exam status is not changing, and your current TRF is still valid.

What is changing in the IELTS TRF?

From 17 July 2026, all IELTS Test Report Forms will include two new things:

  • the Ofqual logo
  • the Ofqual qualification title

Ofqual is the regulator for qualifications, exams, and assessments in England. IELTS says this update is being made so that TRFs meet Ofqual design requirements.

This is mainly a design and compliance update. It is not a change in the IELTS test format, IELTS scoring system, or band score rules.

Is my old IELTS TRF still valid?

Yes. IELTS has clearly stated that TRFs issued before and after 17 July 2026 remain valid for university applications and visa applications.

This means you do not need to panic if you already have your IELTS result.

Your current TRF can still be used for admission, scholarship, and visa purposes as usual.

Will my IELTS score change?

No. This update does not change your IELTS score.

Your Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Overall Band Score will remain the same. The new TRF only adds the Ofqual logo and qualification title.

Do I need to request a new TRF?

You do not have to request a new TRF. It is optional.

IELTS says that students who received a TRF between 1 June 2024 and 16 July 2026 can request an updated version if they want one. The updated TRF will be issued after 17 July 2026, and IELTS says there is no fee for this request.

However, you only need to request it if you personally want the new design. Your current TRF is still accepted.

Will requesting a new TRF extend my IELTS validity?

No. Requesting a new TRF will not reset or extend the validity period of your IELTS result.

For example, if your IELTS result is valid until a certain date, the new TRF will still follow the same validity period.

Will both paper and digital TRFs change?

Yes. IELTS says both paper TRFs and digital TRFs will include the Ofqual logo and qualification title from 17 July 2026.

What should students do now?

For most students, there is nothing urgent to do.

You should:

  • keep your current IELTS TRF safely
  • use it normally for university and visa applications
  • request the updated version only if you want the new design
  • remember that your score and validity period will not change

Final message for students

This IELTS TRF update is not something to worry about. It is only a document design update to meet Ofqual requirements.

Your IELTS result remains valid. Your score remains the same. Universities and visa offices can still accept your current TRF.

If you are applying for study abroad and are unsure whether you need to request a new TRF, you can speak with the GIEC International Education counselling team before taking any action.
